The new RGA 750 Generation II bypass conductor protects above ground storage tanks. There are several types of above ground storage tanks typically found at bulk storage facilities. These include fixed roof tanks, external floating roof tanks and also internal floating roof tanks. Traditional floating roof storage tank designs use metal strips called shunts that are bolted to the roof and press up against the inside of the shell. The intent of a shunt is to electrically bond the shell and roof of the tank. Unfortunately, this type of bond is unreliable and creates an arcing risk at a location where flammable vapors are often present. Instead of energy flowing through the shunt, it goes out and around the shunt to be direct. Shunts alone cannot be relied on.

To address this fire hazard LEC created the original retractable bypass conductor in 1999 and is the only company in the world developing and delivering this technology. For over 25 years, companies around the globe have been using our RGA products to protect from millions of lightning strikes. In 2020 LEC introduced the Next Generation RGA product called the RGA 750. In addition to the advantages of the previous generation, the Gen 2 is dead simple to install and fully pre-tensioned. It now uses aluminum instead of copper to make it corrosion resistant for life.
